WaTER #3 IS A SITE-SPECIFIC SCULPTURE CREATED BY ADAM DETRE AS PART OF HIS ELEMENTS SERIES

Adam heavily believes in the value, importance and relevance of the visual arts and wants to be a continued, valued contributor to their development, especially in the public domain.

Water #3 is inspired directly by the River Fiskars that it lives next to. The sculpture emphasizes the idea that water starts its journey somewhere unknown to us and will continue to travel to the ocean.

The elm tree branches were removed in 2020 leaving the 4-metre tree trunk. From the first time that he saw the tree, Adam knew that he wanted to make something with it to give this beautiful tree a second life – a repeating theme in his work. Adam prefers to works with wood and often seeks to use salvaged or re-purposed materials.

In order to create a sense of the distance that water continually travels he chose to make the piece meander around the trunk rather than straight down the tree.

Adam rarely uses colour in his work and prefers to let light create its own highlights and shadows as it plays across the carved surface of sculpture which helps emulate water ripples that decorate the surface of slowly moving water.

He loves the interaction between the light and the rhythmic, repetitive, biomorphic shapes. The dance with the light makes each glance a unique impression - a fleeting moment as time continues to pass.
